I translated the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
August Stangl
This man was born on 11 July 1857 in Dyersville, Dubuque County, Iowa. He attended the public and parish schools there, and after completing school, he worked on his father’s farm until he was 21 years old. On 3 February 1880, he married Miss Bertha Henkenius, and the young couple then moved onto the family farm. In 1887, Mr. Stangl moved his residence to Roselle Township, Carroll County, where he rented Rollmann’s farm. Two years later, he purchased an 80-acre farm in Eden Township, and the following year another adjoining 80 acres. But indeed, the man was not immune from the blows of fate, because on 1 July 1891 his dear wife passed away, leaving behind five children: Elisabeth, Friedrich, Anna, Maria, and Wilhelm. On 2 August 1892, Mr. Stangl married Miss Augusta Henkenius, a half-sister of his deceased wife, for which Mr. Stangl received a dispensation from the Reverend Bishop. They still live on the above-mentioned farm today, and the Stangl family is highly respected and popular among all their acquaintances. This happy marriage has produced five children, named Dora, Edward, Theresia, and the twins Katharina and Mathilda.
