I translated the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

Peter Neu

This man is one of the most successful merchants in the progressive town of Templeton. He was born in Luxemburg [Europe] on 25 February 1852. There, he spent the years of his youth and attended school. After successfully completing school, he left Europe and immigrated to the free states of America to seek his fortune. Upon arriving in America, he made his way first to Dubuque County, Iowa, where he found employment in farming. After two years, Mr. Neu moved to Michigan, where he found work in the mines. In 1878, he came to Carroll County, Iowa, and in 1880 he married Miss Mollie Jacklie, a well-brought-up and virtuous young lady. Two years after the marriage, the young couple moved to Templeton, where Mr. Neu opened a general merchandise business, which he still operates today. During his residence in Templeton, he has served the town for many years as mayor, as well as a member of the town council. This happy marriage has produced nine children, three of whom died at a tender age. The names of the children still living are: Louise, Philip, Maria, Charley, Earl, and Dewey.
