My Winter family immigrated from England to the US in 1882 or 1883. I don't know the point of entry but they were on the Calhoun Co. census in Manson in 1900:

Lincoln Township, Manson, page 84A
William Winter head, W, M, July 1833,66, England
Jane, wife, W, F, Mar 1836, 64, England
(I believe this couple to be the parents of my great-grandfather who is nearby in Logan Township with brother Herbert, although I have no concrete proof) My great-grandfather's death record indicates his mother's maiden name was Ayre.

My Great-grandparents:
Calhoun Co., Logan Township, sheet 12B
Winter, Thomas head, W, M, Dec 1876, 23, England
Annie M., wife, W, F, Aug 1873, 26, Wisconsin
Hattie M., daughter, W, F, Dec 1898, 1,IA
(Thomas' death certificate shows year of birth to be 1875. Annie is actually Anna Marie nee
Krohn(e)and her birth date was 22 Aug 1868. She got progressively younger over the years! Hattie is a child none of us knew about. Both Thomas and Anna die in CA, as do their other two children born after this census, Edna Luella and my Grandpa, George William.)

Winter, Herbert, head, W, M, Sep 1873, 26, England
Minnie F., wife, W, F, Oct 1876, 23, Wisconsin
George R., son, W, M, May 1897, 3, Iowa
(This is Thomas' brother and, although I have no concrete proof, I believe Minnie to be my great-grandma's younger sister, all information matches her.)

The census indicates arrival in the US as 1883 for William and 1882 for Thomas and Herbert, but I believe they all came together. All three men are naturalized.

William's date of birth is 26 Jul 1832 according to his cemetery records, death 12 Aug 1908, buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson. Survivors are: George, James, John, Thomas, Willia, Herbert sons, daughter Anna Todd. His wife is not mentioned. This is an abstracted obit from the Manson Journal 19 Aug 1908.

William Henry Winter, who I believe is his son, born 12 Nov 1871, England, died Oct 1908 in Mandan ND, buried Rose Hill Cemetery, Manson. Survivors: wife Luella Ebersole, daughter Annie Laddie, children George, Sarah, John, James, Mary, Herbert, Nellie. Abstracted obit from Manson Journal 21 Oct 1908.

Is anyone familiar with this family? Does anyone have access to copies of the Manson Journal that would be willing to look up these obits and copy them or do a transcription?

I am about positive these are my people, but need the paper proof to be sure. If any of their descendants are in the area still, I would truly love to contact you. They never talked much about their families, so we know very little about them. I would love to discover when and where the Winters arrived and from what part of England. The Krohn sisters' family was from Prussia and I need to get a handle on them as well. There is a possibility that Anna was in fact born in Prussia, not Wisconsin (maybe that's why she wouldn't talk about her family, something about being afraid of being sent back to Germany!)
The census record I find for her father cannot be her father. The name is right, but the wife and family are those of a man that I believe to be his brother. The Krohns were in Iowa County, Wisconsin, Pulaski Township,Avoca Village from 1880-1900 or there abouts. They indicate arrival in the US around 1858, but all evidence points to arrival around 1870-72. Parents of Anna and Minnie are said to be Christian Krohn and Friedricke Redmann. Christian appears on the 1860 census in Wisconsin, but the data does not match him at all, while the family is definitely that of John Krohn who I believe to be his brother. I think John came with his own family but under his brother's name and established residency for both families to get them all out of Prussia, with Christian and his family coming later.

Can anyone tell me where the naturalization papers might be for Calhoun Co. for 1883-1900?

Can anyone help, please, to fill in my gaps? I will be happy to share all the information I have found. Many thanks in advance. Susan.
