John Henry Ernst Helmbrecht
(March 24, 1864 – October 2, 1937)

John Henry Ernst Helmbrecht born March 24, 1864 and died October 2, 1937 at the age of 73 years, 6 months and 8 days. He was born at Ebstorf, Germany. From there he emigrated with his parents and the other children, April 25, 1866, and landed at Lowden in Cedar County, Iowa. At thirteen years of age he came with Mr. Hy Rix Sr. to the Lytton vicinity, where he spent the rest of his life. About four years after he came here, his parents followed and settled on what is now known as their old home farm, about three miles north of Lytton. On April 1, 1892 he united in holy matrimony with Miss Mary Knoke of Pomeroy, Rev. H. Meyer officiating. They lived on their home from until they moved to Lytton in the spring of 1920. This union was blessed with four children: William H. Helmbrecht and John Helmbrecht, both of Lytton; Henry Helmbrecht of Ft. Collins, Colorado; and Mrs. Alvina Albinger of Lytton. Mr. Henry Helmbrecht was a faithful member of the Lutheran church all his life. In early infancy he became a child of God through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. After due instruction, as becometh a Christian, he was confirmed on April 14, 1878, at Lowden, Iowa by Rev. J. H. Brammer. Mr. Helmbrecht was energetic, diligent and thrifty all his life; especially in his later years, in consideration of his age. He was still very active when he got a heart attack on August 21, which at first threatened to take him quickly. He received Holy Communion and kept himself well prepared through daily administration of God’s Word. In the absence of the pastor, he requested his wife and children to read to him. Thus, he gradually withdrew from time into eternity, breathing his last under prayer by the pastor of the “Nune Dimittis: Lord, now lettest thou the servant depart in peace.” Mr. Helmbrecht served as deacon of the St. John’s congregation for a number of years. He was also elected on the building committee of the new church and assisted much in its construction. He attended church regularly and besides meeting his general obligations, he was always ready to help everytime we called on him for special services. Those mourning his demise besides his bereaved widow and children are three daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, four grandchildren, one brother, Mr. Wm. Helmbrecht Sr., one sister, Mrs. Dorathea Kruckenberg, many other relatives and a host of friends, with all of whom we join in most cordial sympathy. Two brothers, Carl and August, preceded him into eternity and one brother and one sister died as children. Memorial wreaths are dedicated to his memory by Mrs. C. Scharn, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Glasnapp, Mrs. Dorothea Kruskop, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Helmbrecht. Pall bearers were William H. Helmbrecht, John Helmbrecht, Henry Helmbrecht, Fred Helmbrecht, Walter Helmbrecht, and Otto Helmbrecht. Funeral services were held at the American Lutheran Church at 2 p.m., Rev. H. C.
