Gary R. De Vore, 78, of Pomeroy, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at Accura HealthCare of Pomeroy. Gary Roger De Vore was born on August 31, 1943, in Plano, Iowa. He was the son of Roger and Anna Lou (Printy) De Vore. He graduated from Seymour High School in 1961. Gary then attended Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa, and went on to graduate in 1965 from Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville, Missouri, with a Bachelor's Degree in education. While at school, Gary worked at a foundry, which helped him pay for his education. Gary then lived in Clearfield, Iowa, where he taught business for two years. On June 3, 1967, Gary was united in marriage to Sharon Schmidt in Rock Port, Missouri. The couple moved to Pomeroy in the fall of 1967. Both Gary and Sharon worked at the Pomeroy School where Gary taught business. He later earned a Master's Degree in guidance counseling from Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri, and then became the guidance counselor in the Pomeroy School. He also worked for the Newell Community School, both as guidance counselor and driver's education instructor. After 30 years in education, he ended his teaching career working for the Albert City--Truesdale school system. Through the years Gary also worked summer jobs, ranging from farm assistant to encyclopedia salesman, and for one year he worked at the D&K Dairy Delight in Pomeroy, which he had co-opened. Gary was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Pomeroy and the Lions Club. He was a life member of the Gideons and the National Education Association. Gary enjoyed reading, bowling, gardening, playing cards, collecting coins, and cooking and barbequing. He especially enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Kansas City Chiefs. Survivors include his wife, Sharon of Pomeroy; children, Vicki (Tim) Woodard of Columbia, MO; Beth (Randy) Cumpton of Des Moines and Dan (Pam) De Vore of Pomeroy; 6 grandchildren--Samantha and Matthew Woodard, Lauren and Shelby Cumpton, and Kelsey and Madalynn De Vore; sisters, Jean (Gary) Smith of Coos Bay, OR, Mary (Andy) Michael of Chillicothe, MO, and Rona (Tim) Lubben of Hampton; brother, Dean (Ellen) De Vore of Manson and sisters-in-law, Sharon De Vore of Topeka, KS, and Darlene Schmidt of Rock Port, MO.
