Mercedes Gottschalk, age 96, passed away on October 23, 2012, at Pomeroy. Mercedes Minnie Alma Griesbach was born May 10, 1916 to Henry and Elizabeth (Boettger) Griesbach in Lowden, IA. She was baptized on May 28, 1916 at Zion United Church of Christ, Lowden, IA. She was confirmed into the Christian faith in 1930 at Zion. She attended Lowden Public School receiving her diploma from her father. On November 6th 1935 she married Martin Carl Gottschalk in Lowden, IA. They then moved to Pomeroy, IA and lived in town until 1942 when they moved to their farm west of Knoke. They retired from farming in 1972 but continued to live on the farm. Martin died suddenly on April 1, 1982 of heart failure. Mercedes continued to live on the farm until Oct of 2008 when she moved to Rembrandt, IA to be near her daughter. In September of 2009 she moved to the Pomeroy Care Center where she lived until her death. She became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1936. She served as a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Ladies Aid where she served as Secretary/Treasurer and Member at Large. She was active in Bible study groups and quilted at church. Survivors include her children: Donna Lei (Les) Reinert Urbana, IL, Richard (Jeanne) Gottschalk, Truman, MN and Rebecca. (Kenneth) Rassler. Rembrandt, IA; grandchildren: Skeeter (David) Summers, Lori (Dan) Martin, T.J. (Dawn) Gottschalk, Katrina (Tom) Goetz and her German grand daughter Julia (Leif) Nielsen; great grandchildren: Scott (Nichole) Summers, Jacob Martin, Stephen Summers, Nathanial and Dominic and Alida Gottschalk, Micah, Annabell and Caspian Goetz, and Mika and Lius Nielsen; one great-great-granddaughter: Natalie Summers and her lifelong dear friend Alma Juilfs and many Nieces, Nephews and friends will mourn her passing. She enjoyed being with her family and friends. She especially loved quilting, sewing and needle work. She enjoyed working in her yard and garden and loved to dig potatoes. She loved to walk around the farm and treasured the company of her cats. Special events that she enjoyed was the L.W.M.L. Convention in Ames, IA and the National LWML convention in Rapid City, SD.
