Darlene LaVern Nicholson
(October 31, 1925 - May 20, 2024)

Darlene Nicholson of Lake City, Iowa, passed away on May 20, 2024, at the age of 98. Darlene LaVerne Nicholson was born on October 31, 1925, in Des Moines, Iowa, the first child of Clifford and Ella (Dreeszen) Nicholson. She graduated from Lake City High School in 1945 before going to work as a bookkeeper at Watters Hardware, a position she held for 45 years. The entire Watters family treated her as family. Darlene also considered them family and always spoke of how special they were to her. Family and church were high priorities for Darlene. She attended many games, concerts, and events of her nieces and nephews and later those of her great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She loved her church family at Lake City Union Church where she served in various ways over the years. Darlene's passion for flower gardening led to many enjoyable hours working in her yard. She also loved to walk and logged countless miles walking in and around Lake City. She was a big sports fan and cheered loudest for the Titans and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Darlene once referred to herself as "the biggest dog-lover in Lake City". She took every opportunity to dog-sit and made canine friends wherever she went. In her retirement, Darlene added traveling with friends to her list of fun activities. She also volunteered her time at the Stewart Memorial Hospital gift shop, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents Clifford and Ella Nicholson, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Don (Dorothy) Nicholson and Dean (Donadee) Nicholson and sister and brother-in-law Delores (Don) Weisenborn, nephew David Weisenborn, niece-in-law Sandy Nicholson, nephew-in-law Steve Moothart, great nephews Joran Muench and Chad Weisenborn and great niece Oakley Weisenborn. Left to cherish the memory of Darlene's full, well-lived life are numerous nieces and nephews and their families and many, many friends.
