DIED

On Monday, Dec. 4, 1893, Mrs. Nancy Buckner, aged 88 years, 10 months, and 7 days, of pleuro-pneumonia.

Nancy McClure was born in Christian county, Kentucky, Jan 27, 1805, where she lived with her parents till ten years of age. In 1815 her parents moved to Princeton, Ind., where they remained four years, and then came to Springfield, Ill., their daughter accompany them all this time.

Jan 27, 1825, on her twentieth birthday, Miss Nancy cast her lot with Henry Buckner, and with him settled in Stout’s Grove McClain county, Ill., where they remained thirty one years, then came to Eldora, Hardin county, in 1856. Mrs. Buckner was the mother of eight children, two of whom were awaiting her arrival to that mansion prepared in the Father’s house, one son, who was killed at the battle of Ft. Donelson, Feb. 13, 1862, and was buried at Eldora, and one son who died in the far west, the date of whose death has never been learned; also two sons, W. T. Buckner, of Hartley, O’Brien county, Iowa, and Levi Buckner, of Oregon, and four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Kilgore, Creston, Iowa, Mrs. Margaret Shelton, Carrollton, Oregon, Mrs. E. Kilgore and Miss R. S. Buckner, Lake City, who survive to mourn the loss of a loving mother, who made her home in these latter years with Miss Buckner.

The husband of the deceased preceeded (sic) her to the better home Oct. 30, 1872, and was lain to rest at Eldora, Iowa.

Mrs. Buckner was converted and made a public confession of her faith by uniting with the Presbyterian church when 21 years of age since which time she has been an active, consistent, conscientious Christian. Her abiding faith was attested in her last works of farewell to her daughters at her bedside when admonishing them to meet her in Heaven.

But a little more that three weeks ago she, and her daughters who reside in Lake City were summoned to Creston, Iowa, by the alarming illness of Elizabeth Kilgore, but after two weeks of suffering the sick woman rallied and is now in a fair way recovery. On the improvement of Mrs. Kilgore, the mother and two daughters started on their return home, and when stopping over night at Des Moines a week ago last Wednesday night, Mrs. Buckner was taken suddenly ill, supposing it to be a congestive chill, but on calling medical aid it was advised to bring her home at once, as she was stricken with pneumonia, from which she would probably, owing to her age, never recover. Arriving at Lake City of Friday all that medical skill and loving nursing could do was done, but the life was worn out and all efforts to ease and aid her recovery were in vain, and at half-past 12 o’clock Monday morning the spirit took its flight to the God who gave it.

She fought a good fight, and had kept the faith, and has gone to receive her crown of righteousness.

The remains were taken to Eldora last Tuesday and laid beside that of her husband and son. The last obsequies in this city were conducted by Rev. S. W. Stophlet, and a large concourse of friends accompanied the remains to the depot.
