James Wilkie passed away last Friday morning at his home three miles southwest of Lake City at 4:30 o'clock. The immediate cause of death was a stroke of paralysis. About six years ago, while attempting to remove a boulder from one of his fields. It fell on him, causing serious injuries from which he never fully recovered. There had been considerable improvement to his condition of late, so that his death was unexpected.
James Wilkie was born in County Donegal, Ireland Sept 1, 1851. He immigrated to America in 1880, coming to Philadelphia, where he resided for the ensuing eight years. He was united in marriage in that city to Miss Lizzie Watson, who through the years has been his faithful, loving companion and who survives him. Six children were born to this union, a son, Robert, dying in infancy. Five daughters survive him: Martha, Margaret, Rebecca (Mrs. Roy Madden), Annie and Matilda.
They moved to Calhoun county in 1888, where he has resided continuously ever since. Mr. Wilkie was an industrious man, a devoted husband, a loving father. He united with the Presbyterian church in Ireland and subsequently connected himself with the church of his faith, in Philadelphia, Lohrville and Lake City.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Cottonwood Church conducted by his pastor, Rev. Edson M. Bell, attended by a large concourse of friends and neighbors and interment was made in the beautiful cemetery adjacent.
Among Mr. Wilkie's surviving relatives are two brothers in the old country, Mr. William Alexander Wilkie and Mr. Robert Wilkie, and a cousin, Mrs. Joseph Robb, also a sister, Mrs. J. F. Kratz, Lake City, and several other relatives, including Mr. Thompson Ross at Wright county, Iowa, who were present at the obsequties. Also an uncle, Mr. James Gilchrist. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow.
