George Edwin Scarborough
(November 8, 1889 – September 3, 1956)George Edwin Scarborough was born on Nov. 8, 1889 in Sabula, Jackson County, Iowa, the second of two sons born to George W. Scarborough and Flora A. (Bryant) Scarborough. The family moved to Webster County and then to the town of Humboldt in Humboldt County, Iowa where George E. played on the high school football team. He graduated from Chicago Dental College in 1910 and practiced as a dentist in Humboldt from 1910 to 1914. On Jan. 15, 1912 George married Pearl Vivian Jones and on Dec 21, 1916 they had their one and only child, George Douglas Scarborough. George gave up dentistry and spent one year as assistant cashier and director of the Shelling State Bank in St. Paul, Minnesota, then moved back to Iowa as cashier of the State Savings Bank in Yetter, Calhoun County, Iowa. A 1917 caricature of George in the local papers tells that he was a member of the town council and secretary of the school board; he liked to hunt, drove a Ford car, and was a member of the A.F.& A. M. In 1923 his father died and his mother, Flora, moved in with the family. Between 1925 and 1930 George moved his family to Des Moines, Iowa where he worked as a correspondent for International Harvestor Company. Pearl and George were divorced sometime in the 1930s. In 1939 their son, Geo. D. Scarborough, married Jean E. Diehl on June 25th in Iowa City, Iowa. His mother, Pearl, married W. J. Holesapple on December 16th in Iowa City, and his father, Geo. E., married Lois Ivadel Gibbs (nee Elwood) on December 31st in Washington, D. C.. George and Ivadel continued to live in D. C. while George worked at various jobs: including collector for mail order merchandise and worked for the Washington Gas & Light Company. Ivadel was a stenographer for security & exchange. Ivadel was born and raised in Nevada, Iowa, was previously married to J. R. Gibbs and had a daughter, Shirley, and son, Jerrold Gibbs. Sometime between 1944 and 1950 George and Ivadel were divorced and George moved back to Sabula, Jackson County, Iowa where he was born. According to his WWI and WWII draft cards, George was 6 foot tall, 160 pounds, had gray eyes, and brown hair. George Edwin Scarborough died on Sep 3, 1956 and was buried in Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, Jackson County, Iowa with his grandparents, George and Jane Scarborough.

Dr. G. Scarborough, 67, Former Humboldt Dentist, Died Monday
Dr. George Scarborough of Sabula, 67, former Humboldt dentist, died Monday evening in a Sabula hospital following a heart attack at his home Sunday evening. Funeral services are pending. The Allan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Dr. Scarborough came to Humboldt with his parents, George and Flora Scarborough, at an early age. He attended Humboldt College and graduated from the College of Dentistry at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. He practiced dentistry in Humboldt for a number of years and later was employed in a bank at Yetter. Dr. Scarborough is survived by his son, Major George Scarborough, stationed in Korea, and his mother, Mrs. Flora Scarborough, of Sabula.
