March 19, 1951 - September 17, 2024

Obituary
Arlyn Ray Hemmen, age 73, of Cedar Falls, IA, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Arlyn was born the son of Harry and Doreen (Wickers) Hemmen on March 19, 1951. He grew up on his family farm near Stout, IA. Arlyn attended Dike High School where he graduated in May 1969. He furthered his education at the University of Northern Iowa where he graduated in May 1973 with a BA Business/Finance degree. Arlyn married Becky Buss on March 24, 1972. They had two children, Jeffrey and Monica. After their divorce in 1995, Arlyn married Deb (Schwerdtfeger) Criswell on August 25, 2010.

In his early years, Arlyn was employed at Parkersburg State Bank and Aplington State Bank. He was a member of Reformed Church of Stout in Stout, IA during this time. He also served his community as a member of the Aplington School Board. Most recently, Arlyn was the Vice President of Administration at Waterloo Warehousing in Waterloo, IA. Arlyn enjoyed his work where he was a dedicated employee for many years. After surviving the Parkersburg tornado in May 2008, Arlyn moved to Cedar Falls, IA where he resided until his passing.

Arlyn was known for being a man of routine and always ready for a good laugh. He loved fishing in Minnesota every summer, going to the casino on the weekends, and golfing occasionally. He especially enjoyed having coffee with the boys every morning. He took pride in keeping his lawn manicured and his car neat and clean. At the center of Arlyn’s life was his family. Undoubtedly his greatest joy was being a dad, a Papa, and most recently, a great-Papa to Charlotte Grace.

Arlyn is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Doreen Hemmen, his son, Jeff Hemmen, his in-laws, Harley and Thelma Jean Schwerdtfeger, and his sisters-in-law, Deb Hemmen and Linda (Schwerdtfeger) Byrd.

Arlyn will be dearly missed by his wife, Deb of Cedar Falls, IA; daughter, Monica (Dale) Duckworth of Hickory, NC; step-children, Jason (Kiley) Criswell of Waikoloa, HI and Samantha (Criswell) Lewis of Silverton, OR; granddaughter, Taylor (Justin) Reed of Hickory, NC; step-grandchildren, Eli Duckworth of Hickory, NC; Keola, Cove and Coast Criswell of Waikoloa, HI; and Sawyer and Seeley Lewis of Silverton, OR; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Grace Reed of Hickory, NC; brother, Kevin Hemmen of Dike, IA; brother-in-law, Craig (Holly) Schwerdtfeger of Cedar Falls, IA; along with his nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. We are all going to miss you “lad.” You were one of a kind.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, September 22, 2024, at the Redman Funeral & Cremation Services – Parkersburg Funeral Home.
