Benjamin Henry Frieling age 90, was born March 7, 1931 in Butler County, Iowa, the son of Henry and Mattie (Molendorp) Frieling. He grew up along with his sister in the Aplington area and attended country school.
Ben was united in marriage with Esther Flater on September 28, 1951 at Salem Lutheran Church and settled in Parkersburg, IA. They had four daughters. They have been members of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg since 1962.
Ben proudly served in Korea and worked at Rath Packing until it closed. Ben then worked at Hawkeye Corrugated until retiring in 1993.Ben and Esther loved going camping and eating out with camping friends. Fayette County is where you could find them April-October using their Fayette County park pass they bought each year, enjoying Goldsburg Park the most.
Ben also enjoyed tinkering in his garage while enjoying country music on the radio. Going dancing was another favorite pastime, they followed Rich’s Ramblers for many years.
Visits from grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren made Ben’s day. This spring, he enjoyed his 90th birthday celebration with his family.
Ben died Tuesday, November 2, at Creekside in Grundy Center of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife Esther in 2014, and his parents.
Ben is survived by four daughters; Carol (Roger) Stensland of Parkersburg, Tyanne (Dean) Timmer of Parkersburg, Beverly (Lonnie) Gummert of Cedar Falls, and Karla Frieling of Des Moines; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and a sister Grace (Holm) Damgaard of Arizona.
Ben’s body has been cremated and a private family service will be held Saturday, November 27, at Bethel Lutheran Church with his ashes interred at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg. Memorials may be directed to the family.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff at Creekside and Care Initiatives Hospice.
