Obituary for Jon K. Hapgood
Jon K. Hapgood, age 79, of Parkersburg, Iowa, and formerly of New Hampton, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.
Jon Kent Hapgood was born July 15, 1935 to Frank and Nadine (Hils) Hapgood in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Blairstown High School. Upon completing his high school career Jon entered into the United States Army and served his country in the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge in 1955. After returning home, Jon worked in sales in Waterloo, Iowa.
On November 30, 1957, he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Gordon at Faith Lutheran Church in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Chicago, IL where Jon attended and graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science. He worked as a funeral director in Arizona and Colorado for over 20 years before the couple and their family returned to the Midwest. He then worked in several different sales positions throughout Minnesota, North Dakota and finally settling in Iowa. He was also a sports columnist for the Jesup Citizen Herald and the Denver Forum; writing his final sports article on February 16, 2015.
Jon was a member of the Jesup American Legion Post #311; and was very active in the communities in which he and Norma called home.
Jon is survived by his wife, Norma Hapgood of Parkersburg, Iowa; his children, Joby (Kim) Hapgood of Thornton, Iowa; Darby Hapgood of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Jonette (Kurtis) Dreger of Claremont, Florida; his grandchildren, Jessica Hapgood, Jon N. Hapgood, Taylor Hapgood, Kryssiah Felton, Jayde Hapgood, and Tory and Tyler Dreger; his step grandchildren, Stacy (David) Bowers, and Benjamin and Gabrielle Dirksen; two great-grandchildren; his siblings, Gregory (Nancy) Hapgood of Marion, Iowa, Harriette (Randy) Roberts of Tucson, Arizona, and Corey (Donna) Hapgood of Marion, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Joby Hapgood II and his brother, Richard Hapgood.
