William Hemmen, age 82, of rural Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Heyo* and Fannie Karsjens Hemmen on July 15, 1916, in Grundy County near Ackley, Iowa. He received his education in rural country schools, near his home.
On January 29, 1943, William was united in marriage with Swanetta Wolff at her parents home, in rural Aplington. Following their marriage they have always lived on their present farm which they own. Bill loved to farm, watch sports especially the Hawkeyes and Cyclones basketball, fishing the area's ponds and rivers and watch auto races. However, his family always came first and with great joy he played with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bill was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington and had served as an Elder.
At 10:15 p.m. Saturday, October 14, 2000, Bill died at his home from complications from his cancer illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Linda Meinders, one granddaughter, Tressa Meinders and one brother, Herman H. Hemmen.
Bill is survived by his wife, Swanetta Hemmen, Aplington; four daughters and their husbands, Judy & Kenny Nevenhoven of Aplington, Vicki and Joel Myers of Hudson, Glenda & Duane Folkers of Allison, and Janet & Ron Druvenga of Aplington; one son-in-law, Jim Meinders of Allison; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; one brother, Jacobus Hemmen of Dike; and one sister-in-law, Lenora Hemmen of Aplington.
