Manly Signal - Funeral services for Seaton A. Hurd, who died at the Veteran's hospital in Des Moines on Tuesday, September 1, were held at the Bethel Ev. church on Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock. This was preceded by services at the house at 9:00 o'clock.
The services were conducted by Rev. Blakely and Rev. Parker. Messages of song were brought by a quartet composed of Joy de Vermond, Mrs. C.M. Glider, G.E. Westly and C.M. Sorenson.
After services here the remains were taken to Luana, Iowa, for interment.
Seaton Alonzo Hurd, son of Charles A. and Jessie Bell Hurd, was born at Greene, Iowa, on September 4, 1886.
He attended the public schools of Greene and spent the remaining years of his quiet, useful life, except the time he was in the army, in Clarksville and Manly, Iowa.
He was a harness and shoe repairer by trade and did honestly and well every piece of work that was placed under his care.
On the 25th day of February, 1918, he entered the United States army service at Northwood, Iowa, and two moths later, he was sent overseas where he remained in the World war activities until May 2, 1919.
Mr. Hurd was both baptized into the Christian faith and united in marriage to Miss Iowa Myrtle Bellows on December 23, 1928. Both ceremonies were performed by the Rev. W.A. Siefkes of Clarksville.
An infant son, Seaton Warrington Hurd, preceded his father in death five years ago.
After a lingering illness, which Mr. Hurd bore bravely, he was taken in death on Sept. 1, 1936, in the United States Veterans' hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 49 years, 11 months and 27 days.
He is survived by his faithful wife and an adopted son, Ivan, also the following brothers and sisters: Plin and George Hurd of Clarksville, Charles of Greene, Mary, who is now Mrs. Jake Tack of Clarksville, Jesse of Waterloo, Will of Cincinnati, Ohio, Joe of Flint, Michigan, and Olive, who is now Mrs. James Murphy, of Hastings, Nebraska, and Mrs. Hattie Bellows. A brother Jim, died in France on December 11, 1918, and three others in the family died in infancy.
Seaton Hurd was a faithful member of the Masonic Lodge, the I.O.O.F. and the Modern Woodman of the World. He loved his fellowmen and will be remembered as a true blue friend, husband, son and father.
