Susan was born October 29, 1944, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Stanley Joseph Roose and Elizabeth (Speedy) Roose. Susan grew up in rural Greene and received her education in the communities of Aredale, Bristow, and Greene. She graduated from Greene High School in 1962. She then earned degrees from the Waterloo School of Cosmetology in 1963 and AIC in 1986.

She married Douglas Duane Marsh on February 7, 1965, at St. John’s Lutheran Church Vilmar. Doug and Susan started their life together in Japan while Doug served with the United States Navy. In 1967 they returned to Greene and began farming. Susan was active in the family Farm doing everything, from driving tractors, preparing meals for the men, feeding cattle, and keeping Doug under control. Susan retired in 2006 after working for Hobson Brothers Aluminum Foundry & Mould, Shell Rock, and American Tool & Engineering, Greene.

Susan and Doug enjoyed many fishing trips with their family and friends to Minnesota, South Dakota, and Canada. They also enjoyed golfing and traveling to places such as Hawaii, Germany, Amsterdam, Texas, Arizona, and the southern United States. Susan loved walking on the beach every morning, watching the sun rise, and searching for sand dollars. She always looked forward to her winter getaway.

Susan was an incredible cook and baker her children have fond memories of getting off the school bus and racing to the house to find out what she had made for their snack. She also enjoyed tending her many vegetable and flower gardens Susan was active in St. Peter Lutheran Church, was a 4-H leader for a number of years, and volunteered her time in the community. Fall was always a busy time For Susan because of hunting season. Susan had en all-inclusive hunting camp where all Doug’s and the kids’ friends had three wonderful meals, cookies, bars, and a place to sleep. Susan cherished her grandchildren and spent most of her weekends attending their many activities. The grandchildren loved coming to Grandmas house, riding the Gator, picking raspberries, decorating Christmas cookies, and eating a delicious treat or meal. They also looked forward each year to a special vacation with Grandma and back-to-school shopping. Susan’s greatest joy was spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and friends. Even when she was diagnosed with cancer, Susan never gave up. Physically and emotionally she fought with all she had.
