Larry L. Atteberry, age 69, of rural Parkersburg, died Saturday, February 20, 2010, in Waterloo, from advanced liver cancer.

He was born November 3, 1940, the son of Thomas Harold and Naomi E. Bloomfield Atteberry in Hampton, Iowa. Larry attended Hampton High School until he entered the U.S. Navy at age 17 in 1957. He later attained his GED and continued to pursue his military career as an Aircrew Survival Equipmentman (Parachute Rigger) for another 23 years, retiring in 1980.

Larry was united in marriage with Patricia Avery on October 21, 1967, in Lake City, Florida. After retirement from the Navy, he served as a federal police officer for several years before returning to Iowa in 1986. His love for his wife, children and grandchildren was undeniable…his love for fishing, gardening, star gazing, and laughter was known throughout the community where he lived. Larry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Parkersburg. He was an AWANA leader and attended Bible Study and Men’s Sunday School. Larry was a member of the American Legion and Fleet Reserve Association.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eileen Ruth and Kaye Wood; two brothers, Roy Avery and Walter Dale Avery and a nephew, Jeffrey Atteberry.

Larry is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia Atteberry, Parkersburg, Iowa; one son, Joshua (Emily McShane) Atteberry, Wheaton, Illinois; one daughter, Laura (Dan) Drysdale, Parkersburg, Iowa; four grandchildren, Caitlin, Aaron and Ashley Drysdale, Parkersburg, Iowa and Thomas Atteberry, Bettendorf, Iowa; three brothers, LaVerne (Rebena) Atteberry, Munford, Tennessee; Tommy (Laura) Avery, Tallahassee, Florida and Ronnie (Ramona) Avery, Ocala, Florida; four sisters, Cherie (Andy) Greene, White Springs, Florida; Linda (Wally) Welsh, New Port Richey, Florida; Glenda Avery, Lake City, Florida and Collene Avery, Sopchoppy, Florida; Uncle Iver Boomfield, Parkersburg, Iowa, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews throughout the United States.

Memorial Services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg,

Family will gather to greet friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday, at the church in Parkersburg.

Memorials may be directed to the family of Larry Atteberry.
