Florence McCown 100, formerly of Eldora died at Good Samaritan Home in Indianola, Iowa on Saturday, February 28, 2009.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church in New Providence, Iowa with Pastor Arlen Daleske officiating.

Burial will follow at the Eastlawn Cemetery. in Eldora.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. A memorial fund has been established.

Florence Lindaman McCown was born April 27, 1908 on a farm north of Aplington, IA the daughter John and Tena Lindaman. She grew up in a Christian home and accepted Christ as her Savior when she was a teenager. In her youth Florence was athletic and enjoyed an opportunity to play basketball at the State Tournament in 1925. Florence graduated from Aplington Public High School in 1926 and attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). She taught school in Butler and Hardin counties for 16 years, and noted that each class day began with "The Lord's Prayer" and "The Pledge of Allegiance". In 1933 Florence married Burton McCown. They made their home in Ackley for 10 years before moving to New Providence, where Florence taught school. She and Burt owned and operated the New Providence Hardware store and later Eldora Plumbing and Heating. Florence was active in the community and faithful member of the HC-NP Friends Church. She was also a supporter of Quakerdale, a child through World Vision, Coral Ridge Ministries and other charities. She loved our country and wrote several years ago that she was "concerned about declining moral values". During her retirement years Flo and Burt spent many winters in Mesa, AZ. After Burt's death, Flo lived with her sister, Clara in New Providence for 10 years, and continued to traveling to Arizona until Flo was in her 90s. In 2001 they moved to The Embers in Marshalltown, where she continued to enjoy reading, handwork, word games, playing bridge, and hearing about the activities of her nieces and nephews. In 2006 she moved to Grandview Heights Care Center in Marshalltown, and this past December transferred to the Good Samaritan Home in Indianola, Iowa.

Florence was received into the loving hands of Jesus on February 28, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Home in Indianola.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Burt; brothers, Alvin, William, John Clifford; one niece; one nephew; three sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law.

Surviving are her sister, Clara Wilson; nieces, nephews and cousins.
