GREENE: A Funeral Mass for Charles Michael Stanton, 79, of 703 Park Drive, Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at St.

Mary’s Catholic Church, Greene, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan Officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Greene, IA.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 20th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene, IA.

Charles was born on May 3, 1929, in Greene, IA, to Martha (Maxwell) Stanton and Ambrose Stanton and died at the Liebe Care Center surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 17th, 2009, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Charles graduated from Greene High School, Greene, IA, in 1946, and served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953.

Charles ran a successful livestock buying and trucking business known as Stanton Livestock, Inc. from 1959 until his retirement in 1996. Charles married Elsa (Wendlinger) Groff on June 9, 1973, in Manly, IA and permanently resided thereafter in Greene, IA. Charles enjoyed spending time with family, friends, traveling, and enjoyed serving in various volunteer roles – most notably on the board of directors for Hospice of North Iowa for many years. Charles was a 4th degree knight in the Knights of Columbus.

Charles is survived by his son, Michael Stanton of Center Point, IA, a daughter Heidemarie Warner (Groff) of Des Moines, IA, and a son Peter Groff, and his wife Kris of Des Moines, IA; five grand children, Kirsten Aul (Conry) and her husband Joey of Owatonna, MN, Ryan Warner of Des Moines, IA, Brett Warner of Owatonna, MN, Garett Stanton of Center Point, IA and Garin Groff of Des Moines; three great grand children, Wyatt Oldenfendt of Owatonna, MN, Cooper Aul of Owatonna, MN, and Maveda Warner of Owatonna, MN; two sisters, Bernita Stanton of Greene, IA, and Harriet Claubough (Loren) of Cedar Falls, IA; four brothers, Thomas Stanton (Sue) of Huntington Beach, CA, Harry Stanton (Mary) of Mason City, IA, Roger Stanton of Mason City, IA, and James Stanton (Jan) of Bellevue, NE; two sister-in-laws, Lisa Barros (Wendlinger) and her husband Rocky of Greene, IA and Maria Minge of Bruckmuhl, Germany.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Elsa, his parents, and a brother, William “Billy Joe” Stanton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for donation to Hospice of North of Iowa.
