M. J. Freeman

FREEMAN, HOLDRIDGE, RYAN

M. J. Freeman was born in Madison county, New York, April 27th, 1839. His parents were also natives of the Empire State. The father, Benjamin F. Freeman, died about the year 1847. About 1850 the mother, Elizabeth (Holdridge) Freeman, with her three children – A. R., M. J., and D. R., emigrated to Waukesha county, Wisconsin. Four years later they went back to Cahatauqua county, New York, and remained until 1857, then returned to Wisconsin and settled in Dane county. In 1861, M. J. Freeman enlisted in Company D of the Seventh Wisconsin and served until September 1864. In 1865 he married Miss Lucy Ryan, a native of New York, and in 1866 came to Iowa, lived in Grundy county until 1874, then came to Butler and has since been a resident of Jackson township. Mr. and Mrs. Freeman have had seven children, five of whom are not living – Elton, Elsie, Elmer, Ellis and Elwin.
