Ferdinand E. Dahn, a native of Germany, was born August 15, 1845. At fifteen years of age he was apprenticed to a harness-maker to learn the trade, and served three years. When twenty years old he joined the German army; was in the war between Germany and Austria; participated in several battles, serving three years, and then resumed his trade.

In 1870 he came to America; located in Stephenson county, Illinois, where his brother was living, and there engaged in farming. In the spring of 1875 he came to Aplington and worked at his trade. In 1876 he worked at Ackley. In March, 1877, he returned to Aplington and started a harness shop in the building first used in this town for a store, where he still carries on a successful business. In 1878 he bought property on the town site; built a barn in 1879, and in 1882 erected the neat frame house where he now lives. In 1877 he married Mrs. Minnie Lichtenburg. They have two children – Cora and Frank.
