In the fall of 1867, R. D. Strickland opened up a general merchandise store in a part of the building he now occupies. He now does a business of $5,000 annually. He is a son of Chandler and Hanna (Willard) Strickland, and was born in Watson, Lewis county, New York, October 19, 1832. There he received a common school education, and spent the first thirty years of his life. In 1862 he moved to Herkimer county, New York, where he lived three years, and thence to Parkersburg, West Virginia, where he engaged in trade for some time. In 8167 he came to New Hartford, Butler county, and engaged in the mercantile business, in which he still continues, enjoying a good trade.
