Jay R. Beekmann, age 80, well-known coach and teacher, died Thursday, December 6, 2001, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following an apparent heart attack.

Jay R. Beekmann was born September 2, 1921, in Pisgah, the son of Frederick William and Margaret Ann (Dunkle) Beekmann. He graduated from Pisgah High School in 1938, received a bachelor's degree from Buena Vista College in 1942 and a master's degree from Drake University in 1956.

Jay enlisted in the United States Army on May 16, 1943, at Camp Dodge and was discharged from Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on December 21, 1945.

He was united in marriage to C. Jean Haarup on June 3, 1944, at Alexandria, Virginia. The couple moved to Storm Lake in 1946.

Jay taught and coached at Hayes Consolidated Schools from 1946-1954, at Lake City in 1955 and then came to Buena Vista College in 1955 where he was a professor of education, director of athletics and head baseball coach until retiring in 1986.

He was an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and a deacon. He was a member of Hy-Noon Kiwanis, Jewel Masonic Lodge #309, Pride, and the American Association of College Baseball Coaches.

He also was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Vets (DAV) and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Jean, Storm Lake, a daughter, Trudy and her husband, Gary Lane, Castle Rock, CO, two sons, Barry and his wife, Kris, Sioux City, and Lonnie and his wife, Jane, Fort Lauderdale, FL, eight grandchildren; Matthew and his wife, Lara Lane, Michael & Mitchell Lane, Brock & Blake Beekmann, and Joshua, Jennifer and Zackary Beekmann, also two great granddaughters, Allison and Courtney Lane.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Frederick and four sisters, Marie McDonald, Cecelia Elder, Alma Holladay and Ella Stokes.

Memorial services were held Sunday, December 9, 2001, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Duane Queen officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

The Jay R. Beekmann Scholarship Fund has been established at Buena Vista University.
