Milton Leroy Rosdail, 84, lost his battle with bone cancer on January 16, 2007.
Milton was born to LeRoy & Mabel (Olson) Rosdail in Norway, Iowa, on April 5, 1922, and was baptized on June 4, 1922, at Benton Lutheran Church (Benton County, Iowa). He grew up in different areas of Iowa (mostly the northwest) with his "Ma" and "Pa" and siblings on farms where his father was employed. He was confirmed at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Rembrandt and graduated from Highview school in rural Rembrandt in 1941.
Milton was inducted into the United States Army on November 5, 1942, and honorably discharged October 11, 1945. During World War II, he served in what is now Iran for three years, driving trucks through the mountains. In his later years, he talked of his desire to return to Persia for just "one day."
Although his dream was to be a farmer, he was gifted in math and physics, skills which led him to a career as a mechanic and tow truck driver. Owner and operator of Rosdail Auto Service since the late 1940s, Milt loved the wrecker business and throughout the years helped many people with his trucks. Milt worked hard his whole life and never wanted to retire. One outstanding achievement was keeping his Commercial Driver's License up to date as Class A with Motorcycle and several other endorsements--until his death.
Except for his stint in the service, Milton lived in his home state. He enjoyed going to coffee and visiting with the people of Storm Lake where he lived the last 56 years. During his younger years in the community, he won awards as a Toastmaster and acted as coach/manager for Little League baseball. He enjoyed being a Kiwanian for about 40 years and served in various positions including president and vice-president. He also participated in VFW as a Life Member.
Milton was a loving husband, father, and grandfather; and family was most important to him. He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Marvel Faye (Barr) Rosdail (married December 29, 1950, in Odebolt, Iowa); eight children: Marilyn Moller (Bob Knowles), Malinda Johnson, Mark (Kim) Rosdail, Marjean (Jeff) O'Bannon, Max (Paddy) Rosdail, Melody Zadow (Denny Carlson), Mona Rosdail, and Matthew (Diana) Rosdail; and 16 grandchildren: Lacey Johnson; Kassi and Rachel Johnson; Whitney, Kelsey, Shelby and Hunter O'Bannon; Isaac and Alexandra Rosdail; Megan, Alicia, Ryan, Ashley, Austin and Melissa Zadow; and Chloe Rosdail.
He is also survived by the families of his two sisters (Vern Meredith & Jean Barr) and three brothers (James, Blair and Lyle). These families include Everett Barr; Mildred Ozinga; Arlene Willadsen; LaVonne Rosdail; his nieces & nephews: Janet, Judy; Annette, Danielle, Eric; Jay, Gail, Jan, Joy, Tom, Jon; Becky; Lynn, Lori; Karaan; Nancy, Ginny, Lanny, Jim, Phil; Lois, Donna, Donovan; Darwyn, Carol; and Michael; their spouses, children and grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by in-laws Leora & Don Bettin and Lois Farmer. Other surviving relatives include Frank and Verna Zadow, Ruth Zadow, and their families.
Milton was preceded in death by all of his siblings; two stillborn sons, Marvin and Michael; and his granddaughter, Tara. He was also preceded in death by nieces Leanne Rosdail, Katha Hobermann, and Karen Barr; nephews Kevin Barr (stillborn), Larry Farmer, and Jerrold Meredith; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Milton was a faithful Lutheran and a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake where funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Connie Spitzack officiating. Interment will follow in the Little Sioux Valley Cemetery at Rembrandt, Iowa, with the flag presented by the Alta VFW Post 6172.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 19, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
