Vera D. Roberts - Sept. 21, 1916 - Dec. 24, 2008

Vera D. Roberts, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa and formerly of Marthon, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Vera De Velbiss Cooper was born September 21, 1916 in Somers, Iowa, the daughter of Granville William and Harriet Irene (Cook) Cooper. She started school at a country school northwest of Emmetsburg, Iowa. Her parents then moved to Somers, where Vera continued her education. In the spring of 1929, her parents again moved, this time to Cornell, Iowa and stayed there for a year. They then moved to Dickens, Iowa, where Vera graduated from high school in 1934.

On March 3, 1936, Vera was united in marriage to Arlo Benjamin Roberts in Jackson, Minnesota. They were blessed with a daughter, Susan. After Arlo was discharged from military service in 1943, he and Vera moved to Storm Lake so Arlo could take employment with DeKalb Seed Corn company. In 1952, Vera and Arlo moved to Marathon. Vera became a substitute clerk at the Marathon Post Office in 1959, and later was appointed clerk, a job she held until her retirement in July of 1979. After Arlo’s death in 1995, Vera moved to Storm Lake.

Vera was a member of the United Methodist Church in Marathon and a member of Eastern Star. She enjoyed membership also in the Unique Club in Marathon, as well as several card clubs. She liked to knit and crochet and enjoyed corresponding with friends and family through email on her computer. Friends and family will remember her wonderful sense of humor.

Vera’s first love, however, was always her family. She treasured every moment she was able to spend with them. Her kind and caring ways will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Susan Gieske and her special friend, Jim Klepetka, of Alta, Iowa; her grandchildren: David (Jodi) Siebrecht of Urbandale, Iowa; Dan Siebrecht of Omaha, Nebraska; and Ryan (Julie) Siebrecht of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; her great-grandchildren: Sara and Keri Siebrecht of Urbandale, Kylie Siebrecht of Alta, and Cole, Caleb and Cody Siebrecht of Sioux Rapids; brothers Jack (Marcille) Cooper of San Marcos, California and Conard “Chub” (Ruth) Cooper of Amana, Iowa; sisters: Maxine “Mickey” Rube of Benbrook, Texas; Ruth Gorman of Storm Lake; and Geraldine “Geri” Holmes of Escondido, California; as well as extended family and many friends.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Granville and Harriet Cooper; her husband, Arlo Roberts; her grandson, Marc Arlo Gieske; her brothers: Edward, Charles and Forest; and her sisters: Irene Junkemeier, Loretta Meyer and Edna Jones.

Funeral services for Mrs. Roberts will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2008, at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, Iowa. Interment will be Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Marathon is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call on Sunday, December 28, 2008, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.
