Joyce L. Holmes, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, November 24, 2017, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Joyce Lynette Cross was born on November 13, 1924, to Clarence E. and Dorothy A. (Atkey) Cross in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, Canada. Baptized in the First Presbyterian Church, she graduated from Lafayette High School in Niagara Falls. Then, she attended nursing school in Buffalo, New York, where she graduated in 1946.

On July 31, 1945, she married Virgil Holmes in Niagara Falls. Their union was blessed with three children: James, Richard, and Catherine. After their wedding, Joyce and Virgil moved to Des Moines, Iowa, and later to Storm Lake in 1951. Joyce worked at the Buena Vista County Hospital as a registered nurse. Her loving care of Virgil enabled them to enjoy fifty long and happy years together as man and wife.

Joyce took great pride in having a beautiful flower garden and played an active roll in the garden club. A member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, she participated in the church circle for many years. In addition, she had a love for pets, especially for cats and dogs. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: James (Donna Cech) Holmes, of Oak Park, Illinois, Richard (Stephanie) Holmes, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Catherine Franciol, of St. Martinville, Louisiana, and Fairbanks, Alaska; her sisters: Betty Cross, of Gaylord, Michigan, and Dorothy Bratt, of Groton, Massachusetts; and her grandsons: Ezra Klug, of Seattle, Washington, and Alec Holmes, of Austin, Texas; as well as extended family members and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Dorothy; her husband, Virgil; and her son-in-law, Hatton Franciol.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, November 30, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the funeral home. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Donations may be made to a local animal shelter.
