James F. Stein
December 5, 1947 - July 22, 2017A son of Carl and Helen (Leinen) Stein, James Fred “Jim” Stein, was born on December 5, 1947, in Portsmouth, Iowa.
He grew up and attended school in Portsmouth, graduating from Panama-Portsmouth High School in 1965. Jim continued his education at Iowa State University where he graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science. On April 5, 1975, he married Darla Jackson McCune in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children, Melissa and James.
For many years, Jim worked for the United States Government as an Assistant District Director for FMHA. In 1997, he retired as Loan Specialist for the Farm Service Agency. After retiring, he became a full-time farmer. Over the years, Jim, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a 4H Leader, served as President of the Columbus Club.
An avid Iowa State Cyclone fan, he, also, enjoyed golfing, farming, playing cards, singing karaoke, and bowling. Above all, however, he loved hanging out with his friends and family. He will be, deeply, missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Darla Stein, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Melissa Stein, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and James Stein, of Sioux City, Iowa; his grandchildren: Mandy (Larry) Hegwer, Kevin Willeford, and Marcus Campbell; four great grandchildren; his brothers: Alfred (Jeanne) Stein, of Lansing, Iowa; Kenny (Julie), Larry (Carol), and Pete (Patty), all of Portsmouth, Iowa; Carl (Sandy) Stein; of Odessa, Missouri; Bill (Laurie) Stein; of Thurman, Iowa; and Paul (Denise) Stein, of Amana, Iowa; and his sisters: Dorothy Gross, of Glenwood, Iowa, and Pat (Randy) Pash, and Mary (John) Murtaugh, both of Harlan, Iowa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; his brothers, Bob and Don Stein; and an infant sister, Theresa.
