Warren Gregg, age 95, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Warren Roy Gregg, a son of Roy and Ethel (Knox) Gregg, was born in Montrose, South Dakota, on September 1, 1921. He spent his early years on the family farm near Montrose. While he was still a youngster, however, his family moved to a farm near Dell Rapids, South Dakota. After graduating from Dell Rapids High School, he continued his education at South Dakota State College (now University) in Brookings. Then, he transferred to Iowa State College (now University) in Ames where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy in 1943. Immediately following his graduation, he entered the United States Army. On June 9, 1945, he married Irma Mae Johnson in Chariton, Iowa, at the church where his brother-in-law, the Rev. Howard Trask, was serving as pastor. Continuing his service in the army, he and Irma moved to several postings around the United States.

After his honorable discharge, Warren worked for the US Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service. In 1946, he and Irma moved to Lisbon, North Dakota, followed shortly by a move to Luverne, Minnesota. In 1947, they started their family with the birth of a son. Over the next four years, they had two more sons and a daughter. Of course, Warren loved and cherished his four children.

In 1956, the family moved to Storm Lake where Warren would work for over thirty years as a farm mortgage loan representative for The Travelers Insurance Company. Active in the farm appraisal business for many years, he lectured at national property appraisers’ and bankers’ professional meetings. At the same time, he remained in the Army Reserves and retired as a Major after nearly thirty years of service.

Though very busy with his work, Warren, always, found time to spend with his children, supporting their educational and physical growth as well as serving as a role model for ethical behavior and for treating everyone with dignity and respect. A long-time member of the United Methodist Church of Storm Lake, he played a very active role in the church. He was also active in scouting with his three boys. Warren and Irma worked together to provide a supportive home for their growing family. Although he had multiple opportunities to move up through the corporate ranks, he felt he needed to stay rooted in the values and camaraderie of the Midwest for his family.

During their later years, Warren and Irma doted on their nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, who, for their part, looked forward to spending time with Grandpa and Grandma as much as Grandpa and Grandma looked forward to spending time with them. Irma and Warren spent many years splitting their time between Iowa and Texas, and enjoyed many wonderful winters at their home on South Padre Island, Texas, with family and friends visiting their beach retreat. Warren had a long and wonderful life. He had a positive impact on everyone he touched, and he will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Warren is survived by his children: Dr. Daniel Gregg, and wife, Jeanne, of Morgan Hill, California, Dr. Richard Gregg, and wife, Sarah, of Pennington, New Jersey, Dr. Stephen Gregg, of Atwater, California, and Patricia Barr, and her husband, Dr. David Barr, of Littleton, Massachusetts; as well as by nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Warren was preceded in death by Irma, his loving wife of nearly seventy years; his parents, Roy and Ethel Gregg; and his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Howard Trask.

The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the circle of care givers, who allowed Warren to spend his final years, as he wished, at home. Their loving and tender care was an inspiration for all of us. The family would, also, like to thank Warren’s friends for the wonderful times they spent together, the friends who would just stop in to say “hi” and have a cup of coffee, and the group of friends who would meet for breakfast every Sunday morning after church. The loving support Warren and his family received is appreciated and will be remembered forever. Memorials in Warren’s honor may be directed to the United Methodist Church of Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 4, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place Friday, March 3, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
