Richard E. Utter, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on December 30, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Richard Eugene “Dick” Utter, a son of Eugene and Genevieve (Benedict) Utter, was born on September 21, 1927, in Carroll, Iowa. He attended school in Storm Lake and graduated from Storm Lake High School. Next, he continued his education at Buena Vista University. On July 13, 1945, he joined the United States Navy. In recognition of his service to his country, he was awarded the Victory Medal and the American Theater Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on July 27, 1954. On January 6, 1973, Dick married Janice Goodwin Sudbay. They enjoyed forty-four years of married life together.

Extremely active in the community, Dick worked in insurance sales and real estate and owned Buena Vista Abstract. He served on the Buena Vista Hall of Fame committee and became one of the original members of the Lake Creek Country Club. A member of the B.V. Club, he served as the Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club as well. He was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church.

Sports, also, played a major role in Dick’s life. As a teacher and coach for many years, he enjoyed serving as a referee and later running the time clock at both high school and Buena Vista University games. Moreover, he loved golfing and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Janice Utter, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his daughters, Ronda Utter Hogan (Greg Janicek), of Omaha, Nebraska, and Rita Utter (Leslie Rau) of South Lake Tahoe, California; his son, Randy (DeAnn) Utte, of Wentzville, Missouri; his grandchildren: Jared, Jenna, and Justin (Kristen) Hogan; and Morgan (Colton Aspenleiter), Sarah, and Todd Utter; his great grandchildren: Brantley Aspenleiter and Jayden Hogan-Marshall; his step daughters: Patricia Sudbay (Alan Cerniglia), of Flower Mound, Texas, Kathleen Sudbay (Ronald) Koth, of Mankato, Minnesota, Nancy Sudbay Sahr, of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and Tracey Sudbay Hash, of Fort Collins, Colorado; his step son, John (Cheri) Sudbay III, of Lewisville, Texas; step grandchildren: Adam (Amanda) Koth, Joey and Robbie Sahr; Cody, Taylor, Trevor Hash; and Jason Wright Sudbay and John Sudbay IV; and Julie (Peter) Steinfeld, the mother of Sarah and Todd Utter. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Genevieve Utter.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will take place in the Storm Lake Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Life reception at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dick Utter Memorial Fund and contributions will be made to the Buena Vista University Athletic Department and the Lake Creek Country Club. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
