March 15, 1923 ~ October 22, 2016Harriett H. Mortenson, age 93, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at the Hawkeye Care Center in Sioux Rapids.
Harriett Helen Hotchkiss, a daughter of Herbert and Clara (Boehm) Hotchkiss, was born on March 15, 1923, in Jackson, Minnesota. Confirmed at the Episcopal Church in Marathon, she, also, attended school in Marathon, graduating in 1940. On March 10, 1944, she married Donald L. Mortenson. Subsequently, they were blessed with five children: Judith, Connie, Sherry, Michael, and Dawn.
A devoted wife and mother, Harriett stayed home to raise the children. Moreover, she loved attending family activities and gatherings. She, especially, enjoyed having morning coffee with her sister. With her kind heart and love for life, she touched many people throughout her ninety-three years. She will be, deeply, missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Judith Carpenter, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Connie (Charles) Van Ness, of Lawrence, Kansas, Michael (Beth) Mortenson, of Le Mars, Iowa, and Dawn Mortenson, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-seven great grandchildren; and thirteen great-great-grandchildren; as well as extended family members and friends.
Harriett was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; an infant daughter, Sherry; three brothers: Milton, Hartley, and Byron Hotchkiss; and two sisters: Pauline Mortenson and Naomi Fitsimmons.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 28, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will follow in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place Thursday, October 27, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is overseeing the arrangements.
