Marie E. Herron
August 31, 1922 - November 14, 2016

Marie E. Herron, age 94, of Newell, Iowa, on died Monday, November 14, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Newell.

Marie Elizabeth Hussey was born to Wilbur (W.D.) and Hattie Mae (Shaw) Hussey on August 31, 1922, in Omaha, Nebraska. As a child, she moved with her family to Mason City, Iowa. Ultimately, however, Marie settled in Storm Lake where she attended West Elementary School and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1940. In high school, she played the trombone in the concert band, the marching band, and the orchestra. Marie attended the Baptist Church in Storm Lake where she taught Sunday school. She, especially, enjoyed preparing the Christmas sacks handed out during the Christmas program at the Baptist Church. She loved Christmas and would transform her home into a Christmas wonderland every year! After Marie’s mother passed away, she helped her dad as a bookkeeper. Later, she worked as an operator at Northwestern Bill Telephone Company where she became a supervisor and instructor. Marie belonged to the Eastern Star #209 in Storm Lake. In addition, she served as Worthy Matron for a year and a half. For several years, she, also, belonged to the Toastmasters.

After Wilbur Hussey’s (Marie’s dad) close friends passed away, he took responsibility for their daughter, Margaret Dailey. Marie considered Margaret a sister, and they shared many good times together. In 1971, Marie married Leighton (LB) Herron after dating him for two weeks, two days, and one and a half hours! LB was a beekeeper and an antique dealer in Newell at the time. They shared a love of antiques. They filled their home with Royal Bayreuth, Hummels, Galle vases, and countless cups & saucers.

In 1972, Marie retired. She and LB purchased a motor home. They loved traveling and saw much of the United States. In addition, they made five or six trips into Mexico. After they stopped traveling, Marie taught “55 Alive” and served as president of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship at Bethel Baptist Church in Newell. After LB died, she returned to Storm Lake. With the help of many people from church, she moved to Alta on August 3, 2003. Nonetheless, because of her declining health, she moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Newell, Iowa, in September, 2016.

Marie's family is indebted to two amazing women who lovingly took care of her and became her health care advocates and dear friends – Patricia Kosky and Jean Sarchet.

Family members who will miss Marie include Margaret (Gary) Dailey, of Fountain, Colorado; her stepson, Lee (Diane) Herron, of West Palm Beach, Florida; her grandchildren: Janine (Russ) Emrick, of Monument, Colorado, Jim (Carol) Cave, of Tontitown, Arkansas, and Bill (Jannell) Cave, of Concordia, Kansas; along with numerous great grandchildren, extended relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 18, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place one hour before the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is overseeing the arrangements.
