Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - Fri, Mar 15, 1912 - Death once more came and took away one of the old pioneer settlers of the county. John Spooner, known to almost every man, woman, and child in this part of Buena Vista, was born at Fly Creek, NY, Otsego county, Dec 12, 1828. He made that part of the Empire state his home until 1854 when he was married on Sept 5 at Cooperstown to Miss Sarah Weeks and the young people left at once for Lyons, Iowa where Mr Spooner engaged in mercantile business. After a short time he went to Center Point, Iowa and there in 1869 his wife died leaving him with 6 children.

A year later he was married to Miss Ellen Wood and the same fall 1870, came to Buena Vista county. Never having farmed he had no intention of following this occupation, but as all his life so far he had been an indoor worker, he decided that a change would be beneficial.

He took up the homestead on section 6, Grant where he lived until a year ago when he moved to town. It is about this time that his health began to fail and last fall he had a serious illness from which he recovered but was again taken ill while attending the funeral of Fred J Taylor and never recovered. During his last illness he was at the home of his daughter, Mrs W.A. Jones and it was here that the funeral services were conducted Sunday by the Rev Ambler and the body was laid to rest in the Storm Lake cemetery.

Mr Spooner was a successful farmer although beginning with no knowledge of the same but his ambition had always been to do well in all that he did and this he exemplified in all his actions. Coming here in the early history of the country he took an active part in all its developments.

The four surviving children of his first marriage are: Mrs Hattie Hall of Des Moines; Mrs Nellie Jones of Storm Lake; Fred Spooner of Seattle, WA; and Charlie Spooner of this county. There were two children from the second marriage: Edward and John E Spooner both of this city. These six children with the wife, survive the deceased.
