Humboldt Independent - Tue, Nov 2, 1943 - Four o'clock sunset services were held Sunday afternoon, October 31, at the Smith home for Kenneth J. Smith, 61, prominent Humboldt man, who passed away early Friday morning.

Rev. W. Clark Williams gave a brief talk and prayer. Mrs. Geo. Enquist sang Mr. Smith's favorite song, "Perfect Day." Margaret Taylor read his best liked poems, "The Builder of the Bridge" and Kipling's "L'envol" as benediction. Pall bearers were H.L. Strong, G.K. McCollough, Frankling Jaqua, George Enquist, W.E. Crissey, all of Humboldt, and J.F. Wall of Ft Dodge.

The body was taken to Des Moines for cremation. Members of the family accompanied the remains.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice; his mother, Mrs. Katherine Smith of Storm Lake; a sister, Mrs. Lawrence Geisinger of Storm Lake and a brother Russell, of Knoxville, Tenn.

Mr. Smith was Humboldt county engineer for many years. He resigned that position sometime ago due to poor health. He passed away Friday morning at 4:30 following a lingering illness after submitting to an operation for a brain tumor a year ago.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Iowa State College. He served in World War I as a First Lieutenant. In 1923 he was appointed county engineer of Humboldt, a position he held with the exception of four years, until his resignation a year ago. He was a Mason, a Legionnaire, a former Rotarian, a member of several engineering societies and of the Congregational church.
