Storm Lake Register - July 25, 1939 - Mrs John Hughes, 74 well known Storm Lake woman passed away Saturday afternoon at her home, 718 Erie street. Mrs Hughes had not been well for several years. She suffered a third stroke the (Tuesday) evening preceding her death.

Funeral services are being held this Tuesday afternoon at the Lakeside Presbyterian church. Interment will be in the Storm Lake cemetery.

Viola Daum, daughter of George and Nancy Daum, was born at Rippey, Iowa Oct 28, 1864. When 10 years of age she moved with her parents to Buena Vista county where she grew to womanhood.

In 1883 she was united in marriage to George Fettis and to this union was given one son, Roy Fettis of Vancouver, WA. She was united in marriage to John J Hughes of Storm Lake in 1907. Not only did she quickly fill a needed place in the home as a wife and homemaker, but she proved to be a real mother in spirit to the three sons of Mr Hughes. To them she gave freely and understandingly of her affection, care and deepest life interest.

At the time of her death she was 74 years, 8 months, and 26 days of age.

She leaves to mourn, her husband; her own son; the three Hughes boys: William, David, and Harvey; and 9 grandchildren.

Her aged mother, Mrs Evaline Daum of Fruita, CO; three sisters: Mrs Amy Sourich, Hillsdale, WY; Mrs Maude Sawdon and Mrs Hattie Brubaker of Fruita, CO also survive.
