Storm Lake Register - October 11, 1938 - Farewell tributes were paid to H.L. Hughes, highly respected citizen of Storm Lake Friday afternoon when sorrowing relatives and friends attended funeral services at the Methodist church.

Although Mr Hughes had been in feeble health, his death Wednesday afternoon came as a shock to his family and friends. Mr Hughes passed away peacefully while sleeping. Death was the result of a heart attack.

Hugh Lloyd Hughes, oldest son of Thomas and Catherine Hughes, was born in Portage Prairie, WI Oct 24, 1855. He received his education in the Portage Prairie schools and attended business college at Fox Lake, WI. At the age of 21 he came west and located on a free claim but later went into the lumber business at Howard, S.D.

In Oct 1886 he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Williams of Wisconsin. To this union four children were born: Mrs Fred Witter, Morton James Hughes, Katherine Luella Hughes, and Everett Lloyd Hughes, all of Storm Lake. In 1900 Mr and Mrs Hughes moved to Storm Lake to start in the lumber business which he conducted for about 10 years.

In 1910 he started in the furniture and undertaking business and up until 5 years ago he operated the H.L. Hughes furniture store, one of the dependable institutions of the community, now operated by his son, Everett. The mortician work has been continued by his son, Morton, in the Hughes funeral home.

Besides the four children mentioned, he is survived by his wife and 3 grandchildren: Jane Hughes, Doris Louise Hughes, and Helen Jeanette Witter. He also leaves to mourn two sisters: Mrs Owen Jones and Mrs Margaret Owen; and one brother, Jonathan Hughes, all of Cambria.
