December 4, 1896 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Died in Storm Lake, Iowa, Nov. 29, 1896, of bronchial and heart troubles, Ellen S.W. Dean.

Deceased was born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, January 5th, 1834. When quite young her parents moved to the then "far West" settling in Tremont, Illinois, where the little girl grew to womanhood, surrounded by brothers and sisters who were one day to love her as a sister and mother in one.

She was but seventeen when the gate of heaven swung open, the "Good Shepherd" called, the mother passed in, and the eldest daughter was left to take her place in the home, how well she succeeded those who knew her best can tell. Ever unselfish, gentle and true she was her father's patient housekeeper, helper and stay, and by her daily example was a fitting guide for the brothers and sisters, of whom but two survive her, Mrs. C.W. Moore, of Storm Lake and J.A. Dean, of Sioux City.

For nineteen years her home has been with her sister, Mrs. Moore in Storm Lake, where she has won the hearts of all who know her. The older people blessed her, the younger ones loved her, the little children kissed her and called her "Auntie Dean."

A wave of sadness stilled every household. It was whispered that the Angel of Death had been in their midst and gathered this dear one. She died as she had lived, quietly, peacefully, falling asleep to awaken in "The Better Land."

Her funeral was at the home on Dec. 1st. She was one of the charter members of the Universalist Church of Storm Lake, and was always a faithful earnest worker therein, the funeral services were conducted by the Rev. G.W. Skilling of that church, assisted by Rev. M.H. Kendall. A choir of friends sang very sweetly and feelingly "Some Sweet Day" "We shall meet beyond the River" and "Meet me There" after which old friends and neighbors took up the casket and laid the dear form tenderly away, amid evergreens and flowers, all the work of willing hands prompted by sympathizing loving hearts.
