November 24, 1899 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - John Avenell died at his residence in this city Wednesday evening, Nov. 22, 1899, of dropsy, aged 74 years, 3 months and 27 days.

He has been for many years a respected citizens of Buena Vista county, residing most of that time in Grant township. His old friends and neighbors as well as his immediate relatives mourn his departure, which of itself speaks louder than words of his sterling qualities as a man, husband and father.

He was born July 5, 1822, in the town of Burton, Wilkeshire, England, emigrated to this country with his parents, five brothers and four sisters in 1837. He resided in Herkimer county, New York until 1857, then moved to Iowa county, Wisconsin, where he was married to Miss Nancy Pullis on Nov. 24, 1856. In 1884 he moved west locating in Grant township, this county, where he remained engaged in farming until the fall of l895 when he removed with his family to this city. He was regarded as one of the most substantial farmers in the county, having become well-to-do financially.

Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Avenell, his widow and six of whom survive him, four sons and two daughters, all grown to maturity: R.W. of Sac City, John C., Wm. C., and B.F. of this city, Mrs. T.J. Gerry of Sulphur Springs, and Mrs. A.W. Soeth of Grant township.

One girl died in early girlhood.

The funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the family residence. Rev. Jenkins of the Baptist church officiating
