Wyatt Schaller Yon, 83, of Storm Lake, died on Friday, December 18, 2015, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Wyatt was born on May 14, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, to Wyatt Leslie and Catherine (Schaller) Yon. The family moved to Storm Lake in 1933. During his youth, joined the Boy Scouts and worked his way up to become an Eagle Scout. He attended school in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1950. After graduating from Northwestern University in 1954, he served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956, spending eighteen months of this time in Japan. In October of 1956, he joined his father in the Wyatt Yon Agency, an insurance, real estate, and farm management firm, in Storm Lake. On June 22, 1958, he married Lola Deanne Kelsey, a daughter of Reed and Margaret Kelsey of Storm Lake.

A fifty-five year member of the Masonic Lodge, the Abu Bekr Shrine, and a past member of the Elks, Wyatt became an active member of the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce while he was in business, serving as the organization’s president. In 1966, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Storm Lake Jaycee. A past president of the Storm Lake Library Board, he, also, served as chairman of the building committee when the new library and Witter Gallery were built. In addition, he served as mayor of Storm Lake in 1975 and played an instrumental role in promoting the addition of trees and planters along Lake Avenue when it was redone that year. A past director of Citizen’s First National Bank and the First National Company, he, also, served on the advisory board for the Job Service of Iowa. As a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, he served as trustee and elder as well as on the planning committee for renovating the sanctuary in 1976.

Preceding Wyatt in death are his parents; his wife, Lola, on September 23, 1990; and his brother-in-law, James Prichard. Surviving are his two children, Wyatt K. Yon, of West Des Moines, and Catherine Y., and her husband, Thomas J. Elward, of Chicago, Illinois; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace and Daniel John Elward and Wyatt Samuel and Ella Catherine Yon; and one sister, Eloise Prichard, of Storm Lake; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Memorial services for Wyatt S. Yon will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Rev. Duane Queen officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be Monday, December 28, 2015, from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. with the family present in the Fireside Room at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. A Masonic Funeral Service will follow the visitation. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
