Lorna Newell
December 27, 1925 - November 18, 2015

Lorna Newell, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Edith Lorna Catt, a daughter of Ernest and Hilda (Ellis) Catt, was born in South Brent, England, on December 27, 1925. She lived her youth and received her education in South Brent. During World War II, Lorna worked on a lathe in a factory in England. There, she met Beryl Edgar Newell, the love of her life. A soldier, he was stationed with the Corp of Engineers in England. After Beryl returned to the United States in 1947, he procured a plane ticket for Lorna to come to America.

After re-uniting in New York City, Lorna and Beryl married on July 20, 1947, at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. Following their wedding, they resided in Storm Lake except for a brief period of ten months back in England in 1949. Lorna and Beryl traveled by ship on the Queen Elizabeth with their first born son. After they returned to Storm Lake, Beryl resumed work as a well-known and respected painter and carpet cleaner. In addition, he also did home interior improvement and served as a custodian at several of the Storm Lake Schools, the Citizens First National Bank, the post office, and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. In the meantime, Lorna, a devoted homemaker, wife, and mother, worked in the laundry department at the Storm Lake Community Schools as well. Throughout her lifetime, Lorna always exhibited the humble heart of a servant.

Among the charter members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Lorna remained a life-long member. She enjoyed all types of board games but especially liked playing scrabble. Gifted in crochet, she created many articles of clothing for newborns at the Storm Lake hospital. Moreover, she had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh which she instilled in her three sons. Inseparable, Lorna and Beryl enjoyed their retirement together. Very proud of her English heritage, she retained her British citizenship. Her life-long friendships included those with whom Beryl had served during the World War II, survivors of the Normandy Invasion.

Lorna is lovingly remembered and honored by her family which includes her three sons: Keith (Carol) Newell, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Brian (Demaras) Newell, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Michael (Molly) Newell, of Davenport, Iowa; her grandchildren: April, Brandon, Devin, and Jeremy Newell; six great grandchildren: Alyana, Brenden, Cory, Madison, and Taylor Newell; and Cameron Orsburn; her sister, Valerie Copley; her sister-in-law, Margaret Catt; three nieces: Sandra and Lindsay McEvoy and Susanne Gilmour, all of England.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Beryl; her brother, Ernest Catt; and her sister, Myrtle Cockbill.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 22, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
