September 11, 1923 - September 8, 2015Bernice L. Grau, age 91, of Sun Lakes, Arizona, formerly of Newell and Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2015, in Chandler, Arizona. She joined her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the angels, and the communion of Saints (her parents, Herman and Edna Bumann; her brother, Arlin Bumann; her sister, Irene Johnson; and her daughter-in-law, Cheryl Grau; as well as friends and loved ones) who went before her.
Bernice was born and raised in Hanover and Alta, Iowa. After completing high school, she attended a business school in Omaha. Then, she worked at Citizens Bank in Storm Lake for a while. In due course, she met her husband, Leo, at the Cobblestone Inn Ballroom. They, later, married.
Together, they farmed north of Newell for many years. Eventually, they wintered in Arizona before becoming full-time residents in 2008.
In 2015, they celebrated seventy years of marriage with their children and Arizona friends. Bernice loved her husband, church, family, and friends. She enjoyed people. Over the years, she taught Sunday school, took an active role in the NCN Club, golfed, and made many friends as an Amway distributor. She demonstrated her love for life each day through her positive, beautiful, caring, and giving spirit. She will, indeed, be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Leo Grau; her children, Sharon (Thurman) Gilbert and Carmen (Barry) Miller, of Sun Lakes, Arizona, and Tom Grau, of Newell, Iowa; two grandchildren, Justin Gilbert, of Chandler, Arizona, and Michelle (Tyler) Hendricks, of Des Moines, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 14, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will take place Sunday, September 13, 2015, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
