January 3, 1926 - July 30, 2015

Vern C. Plagman, age 89, of Adel, Iowa, and formerly of Alta, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa.

Vern Claire Plagman was born on January 3, 1926, in Peterson, Iowa, to Arthur and Anna (Luetkeman) Plagman. He attended Peterson Community School where played football, basketball, and baseball with the nickname “Tuffy.” After graduating from high school in 1944, he attended the University of Northern Iowa for a short time before returning home to help on the farm.

The beloved husband of Phyllis (Goetschius) Plagman for sixty-eight years, Vern met her at her sister’s wedding in January 1947. They married on September 21, 1947. For a short time, they lived in Linn Grove. Then, for forty years, they resided in Alta, Iowa, where Vern continued to farm. They were long time members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa.

A life-long fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Vern enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially baseball. Some of his favorite hobbies included playing dartball and horseshoes, hunting, and fishing for walleye.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles Plagman; his sons, David and Terry Plagman; and his daughter, Susan (Plagman) Reimers.

Vern will be forever remembered by his wife, Phyllis, of Adel; his sister, LaVonne (late-Delbert) Schuknecht, of Linn Grove; his daughter, Cindy (Kirk) Schnoebelen, of Altoona; his sons, Kevin (Kris) Plagman, of Adel, and Jerry Plagman, of Alta; two daughters-in-law: Rexene Plagman, of Columbia, and Denise Plagman, of Runnells; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and his sister-in-law, Mary Alice Plagman; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Adel. Burial will take place at a later date in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will be Monday, August 3, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Adel. Memorials in Vern's name may be directed to: 25103 Calico Creek Lane, Adel, Iowa 50003. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
