John Dumkrieger
March 12, 1928 - May 14, 2015John Dumkrieger, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, May 14, 2015, in Storm Lake.
John Lowell Dumkrieger was born on March 12, 1928, to Homer and Bessie (Sas) Dumkrieger in rural Linn Grove, Iowa. He grew up on a farm five miles south of Royal, Iowa. Known as Johnny in his younger years, he graduated from Brooke Consolidated School in 1946. He, then, went on to attend Mankato Commercial College at Mankato, Minnesota, before returning to the family farm.
Next, John worked at the Buena Vista County Treasurer’s Office as deputy assistant treasurer for three years. During that time, he met the love of his life, Joyce Small. They married on October 24, 1954. Subsequently, they were blessed with two daughters, Stacy and Stephanie. This past October, they celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.
In 1952, John began a career that would span forty-six years at the Security, Trust, & Savings Bank of Storm Lake. Indeed, he continued to serve on the Board of Directors at the bank until his death. Having a passion for his job, he found serving his customers and working with his co-workers very rewarding.
A “southpaw” pitcher in junior high and high school, John had many other interests and talents as well. He helped start and coach the Storm Lake Jaycee’s Babe Ruth baseball league. For many years, he enjoyed playing golf and pitch and spending time with friends. A proud charter member of Storm Lake’s morning Kiwanis group, he, generously, gave of his time to promote the group’s activities. A member of the Northwest Iowa Banker’s Association, he served a term as president of that organization. Having a deep love for music, he participated over the years in community musical theater programs and barber-shop quartet recitals. He, especially, enjoyed sharing his gift for music in church by singing in the choir and at weddings and funerals.
Above all, his greatest passion was for his family. His daughters, Stacy and Stephanie, and granddaughters, Kelsey and Meredith, lit up his life. He fondly remembered his nightly ritual of putting them to bed with the song, “Sugar and Spice!” He was able to express his deep love for his daughters in the way he cared for them through the years.
We will remember John as a true gentleman, kind, considerate, and the embodiment of a man who served his family and community.
John is survived by his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Stephanie Politte, and her husband, Jeff; his granddaughters, Kelsey (Ryan) Fuerstenau and Meredith Politte; and his sister, Delores Raveling; as well as by many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Stacy; a brother, Leroy Dumkrieger; a sister, Gertrude Phillips; and his brothers- and sisters-in-law along with nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 18, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.
