Arlo Maurice Benson
September 1, 1922 - April 4, 2015

Arlo Maurice Benson, a son of Clifford and Hazel (Rutherford) Benson, was born in a farmhouse near Marathon, Iowa, where he lived for most of his life.

He had a full life with both sadness and happiness. His father died when he was 3, and he was raised by his grandparents with his mother coming home on weekends from her work. He attended Buena Vista College and the University of Iowa before enlisting during World War II. He received a medical discharge in 1944, however, while in Officer Candidate School (OCS).

He started farming near Marathon in the 1950s and continued in that capacity throughout the rest of his life. Subsequently, however, he took a second job, becoming a bank officer in Pocahontas where he had a full second career. Eventually, he retired to spend time in Sun City, Arizona, and Arnolds Park, Iowa, while still managing the farm.

He was fortunate to have two wonderful wives: Sue, who passed after fifty-five years of marriage, and Blanche, who survives him. Most recently Blanche and Arlo shared a home in Spencer.

With his family members at his side, Arlo Benson passed away peacefully on April 4, 2015, in Brainerd, Minnesota, after a long illness.

He is survived by his second wife, Blanche; his brother, Delford; his two sons, Charles and Mark; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren with a new baby on the way. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara, and his first wife, Sue.

Arlo, always, wanted to make life easier for the members of his family. To that end, he was quite successful. All of them were able to find happiness and success in the careers of their choice. Indeed, he left them with a wonderful and loving legacy.
