Wayne Forbes, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, January 22, 2015, in Estero, Florida.

Wayne J. Forbes, a son of Dewey Wainwright and Veda Mae (née Vannorsdel) Forbes, was born on April 20, 1925, in Pierson, Iowa. On June 15, 1947, Wayne married Betty Wilson in Lanesboro, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with two daughters, Rebecca and Barbara.

After proudly serving his country as an Aerial Navigator in the Army Air Corps from August, 1943, to December, 1945, Wayne attended Buena Vista College where he majored in business and graduated with the Class of 1947. Then, he worked for J.C. Penney in Storm Lake for six years before opening Forbes Shoes Store in 1953, which he operated until he retired in 1988.

From 1962 to 1969, Wayne served as a trustee on the Buena Vista College Board. As a member of the BVU Alumni Association Board, he also served as its president. In 1977, he was honored with the John Fisher Award as well as the Henry Olson Alumni Award.

Wayne and Betty were notable benefactors to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center for many years. Indeed, Wayne served as a volunteer campaign adviser in 2000 on the hospital board to help raise donations for the 2001-2003 building project.

Active in the Storm Lake community including in the Jaycees, the Chamber of Commerce/retail bureau, the Community Chest, and the board of the Storm Lake Industrial Development Corporation, Wayne served on the board of the Commercial Trust and Savings Bank for thirty-three years as well. Active in the leadership of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, he also served on the Sessions Committee, the ruling board of the church.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving daughters, Rebecca Sue (Richard) Potere, of Sarasota, Florida, and Barbara Jo (William) Bell, of Ft. Myers, Florida; his sister, Donna (Paul) Steiner, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; his brother, Darlo (Sue) Forbes, of Kansas City, Missouri; and his grandson, Tony Potere.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Lou, in 2004.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Lighthouse Church in Bonita Springs and/or to Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Friday, January 30, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
