May 31, 1923 - February 1, 2015Alta, IA
Evelyn A. Braunschweig, age 91, of Alta, passed away on Sunday, February 01, 2015, at the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehab Center of Aurelia.
Evelyn Amanda Martha Braunschweig was born on May 31, 1923, along with her twin sister, Erma, at her family’s century farm in rural Aurelia, Afton Township, to Henry and Clara (Jurgens) Westphal. The twins, the second and third additions to the Westphal family, joined their older sister, Melvina, and later, their younger brothers, Ervin, Arlen, and John. Baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Afton Township, she attended a country school through the sixth grade. Then, she stayed home to help her mother care for her younger siblings.
On June 16, 1946, Evelyn married Theodore (Ted) Braunschweig at Immanuel Lutheran Church. In time, she and Ted were blessed with six children, two of whom died in infancy. They raised their children while farming in the Albert City and Alta areas. In addition, Evelyn worked as a cook at Zion Lutheran School in rural Storm Lake and as a nurse’s aide at the Buena Vista County Hospital. Moreover, she always enjoyed attending her children’s school activities and athletic events.
Evelyn dearly loved her family and in her later years was happiest rocking a grandchild or great-grandchild on her lap. She was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team and the Alta basketball and baseball teams. A long-time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alta, she also belonged to the Ladies’ Aid Society.
Those left to cherish Evelyn’s memory include her sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Connie Braunschweig, of Alta, Randy and Brenda Braunschweig, of Newell; her son-in-law, Steve Movall (husband of Connie), of Rembrandt; and her daughter-in-law, JoAnn Braunschweig (wife of Dan), of Laurens; eleven grandchildren and their spouses/significant others: Shauna (Nate) Black; Adam, Jason, Jim (Heidi), Josh (Jodi Vanden Bosch), and Shane (Jamie) Braunschweig; Brian, Bruce, and David Movall; Jessica (Michael) Braunschweig-Norris; and Karen (Dwayne) Salmon; fifteen great-grandchildren: Katrina, Rachel, Caden, Carter, Lennon, London, Willa, Grady, Emory, Haddy, Brady, Ellie, Jacey, Saif, and Hailee; her brother, Arlen Westphal, of Arizona; her brother and sister-in-law, John and Char Westphal, of Humboldt; and her sister-in-law, Rosemary Westphal, of Alta, as well as many dear friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; her daughter, Connie; and her sons, Ronnie, James, and Dan; as well as by her sisters and one brother.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 04, 2015, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Alta with the Rev. Craig A. Cummins officiating. Burial will take place at the Woodlawn Cemetery of Alta. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 03, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
