Shirley Herzog, age 78, of Lakeside, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 24, 2014, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

A daughter of George and Helen (Toohey) Peterson, Shirley Ann was born on May 12, 1936, in Spencer, Iowa.

Shirley grew up in the Omaha area where she met Jack Herzog. They married on June 7, 1960, in Omaha. Subsequently, they were blessed with four children: Debra Kay, Barbara Ann, Bill, and Sheryl Lee.

Shirley was a member of the Women of the Moose, and volunteered with the Storm Lake AMVETS events. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards, reading, bowling, swimming, going on boat rides, and site-seeing. Moreover, she loved her pets. Most of all, however, she cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren. Remembered as loving and fun wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Jack Herzog, of Lakeside, Iowa; her children: Debra Williams, of Omaha, Nebraska, Barbara (J.J.) Koehler, of Illinois City, Illinois, Bill (fiancée, Katie Demuth) Herzog, of Lakeside, Iowa, and Sheryl Herzog-Hunter (fiancé, Terry Waterman), of Omaha, Nebraska; her grandchildren: Nick, Natalie, and Ethan Baack; Whitney Hunter; Aaron (Amber) and Jimmy Koehler; and Deana and Devin Williams; her great-grandchild, Lexi Koehler; her brother, Richard “Dick” (Judy) Petersen, of Omaha, Nebraska; her brother-in-law, Don Herzog, of Omaha, Nebraska; and her best friend, Carolyn Wilson, of Lakeside, Iowa; as well as nieces; nephews; extended family members; and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Ronald Petersen; her granddaughters, Jennifer Koehler and Mercedes Hunter; her son-in-law, Michael Hunter; and her sister-in-law, Joan Herzog.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place Monday, December 29, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
