Robert Magnuson, age 89, of Alta, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center of Storm Lake.

Robert was born on December 13, 1924, in Cherokee, Iowa, to Carl and Jennie Magnuson. Baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee in 1925 and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta in 1938, he attended schools in Aurelia and Alta, graduating from Alta in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army at age 18, serving three years in the U.S. and Europe. After his discharge, he began farming with his father, rented farms in the Aurelia and Alta area, and then purchased a farm in Alta. He also served as an insurance and crop adjuster. In 1972, he became a real estate broker and opened an office in Alta, which he managed for over twenty years.

On August 17, 1947, Robert married Ruby Brees at the Methodist Church in Peterson, Iowa. They were, subsequently, blessed with three children, Kathryn, Sharon, and Robert. Robert and Ruby made their home in Alta. In 2011, Robert became a patient at Sunset Knoll in Aurelia, Iowa, where he resided until his death.

Over the years, Robert participated in many community organizations. A lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he served on the council and the building committee as well as participating in other volunteer work. A fifty-year Mason, a charter member of the VFW, a charter member and board member of the Alta Country Club, a Kiwanis member for over twenty years, he, also, served on the school board for six years, on the Alta Industrial Board, and on the Alta Old Hospital Board. In addition, he volunteered as a driver for the VFW Health Service.

Bob enjoyed golfing (once having made a hole-in-one), bowling, playing cards, traveling, having daily coffee with the "guys," and especially, spending time with family.

Preceding Robert in death were his parents; two infant grandchildren; and his brother-in-law, Leonard Tierney.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ruby Magnuson; his children, Kathryn Fuger (James Brandt), Sharon Maguire (Frank), and Robert Magnuson (Cheryl); his grandchildren, Kristen Jacobsen (Andrew), Ryan Fuger (Amy Hatch), and Emily Magnuson; his great-grandchildren, Sydney Fuger, Maxwell Fuger, and Taylor Jacobsen; and his sister, Doris Tierney; as well as other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held on Monday, December 1, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Alta with the Revs. Jane B. Johnston and Dr. James M. Brandt officiating. A private family burial will take place at the Scandinavian Cemetery of Alta with partial military rites conducted by the Alta VFW Post #6172. A visitation was held on Sunday, November 30, 2014, with a Masonic Service in the evening at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association, or a memorial of choice. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta is in charge of the arrangements.
