Christ and Dorthe Plagman

Johan Christian Friederick Plagemann was born on August 1, 1836, in the village of Daschow by Plau, Province of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. The first child of Joachim Friedrick Christoph Plagemann (1791-1846) and Elizabeth Luise Dorothea Schulz Plagemann (1814-1896), he would, eventually, have three brothers and two sisters. He married Dorthe Katherine Friedrike Bielefeld, born January 1, 1846, at Wooster by Goldberg, Mecklenburg, and with their five children, Henry, Sophia, Katy, Charles, and Mina migrated from Mecklenburg in 1874. After arriving in New York, they made their way to Peotone, Illinois, where he was, most likely, employed in a dye factory.

In 1885, they arrived in Peterson on the newly built Chicago and Northwestern railroad. They began farming in Section 7, Brooke Township, Buena Vista County, about two and a half miles south of Peterson. This was close to his two brothers William and Karl who had come a few years earlier. Christ became one of the members of St. John’s German Evangelical Church in Brooke Township in 1888 and served in many ways. This is now the United Church of Christ.

The Christ Plagman family was composed of ten children: Henry (1864), Sophia Foreman (1865), Katy Genson (1868), Charles (1870), Mina Grapenthin (1872), William (1875), Fred W. (1877), Emma Piethmann (1880), Mary Grapenthin (1882), and Lina Schulz (1887).

In the year of 1906, Christ and his wife retired from the farm to their home in Peterson, Iowa. Christ died on 9 Jan 1923 at the age of 86 years. He was the oldest of the brothers and sisters, and the last to die. Fifty-one of these years were lived in America. His wife Dorthe died on December 12, 1931 at the age of 85. Both are buried in St. John’s Cemetery, Brooke Twp., south of Peterson, Iowa.
