Jul 26, 1948 - Oct 31, 2014

Alta, Iowa

Karen K. Moore, age 66, of Alta, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2014, at her Alta residence.

Karen Kay (Melander) Moore was born in Alta, Iowa, on July 26, 1948. She grew up in Alta and graduated from Alta High School in 1966. In 1969, she married Dennis Moore; they later divorced. Karen raised two daughters in Alta. She attended the University of Iowa, taking courses in Social Work. Some of her favorite memories were from an extended vacation in Europe. For many years, she worked at Melanders Appliance Store, the U.S. Postal Service, and later at Wal-Mart.

Dedicated to Trinity Lutheran church, she actively participated in the Sunday school program. She, also, loved helping with local VFW events. An avid bowler and golfer, she played golf for many years with Roland Chapman “Chappie,” her buddy. An accomplished seamstress in her younger years, she, often, made dresses for the weddings of her family members. Always known for her cooking, she would bake for church and school events as well for her family. She, even, worked her way through an international cookbook, making dishes from scratch that most people buy today including pizzas, tortillas, crepes Suzettes, and baked Alaska. For her daughters’ birthdays, she would make themed cakes from scratch such as Snoopy and Woodstock as well as Pac Man and the ghosts; and for Easter, she’d make beautiful baskets with bird’s nests and other creations. When spending time with family, she loved to play scrabble. Her family and friends will remember her most for her kindness to others, her generosity, and her loving nature.

Karen Kay Moore was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Bernyce Melander; an infant sister, Carolyn Melander; her brother, Harry Melander, Jr., “Butch;” her sister, Susan Steele; her uncles, Leo and Ray (Margaret) Eilts; her aunts, June (Harry) and Alice (Dwayne) Henkel; and her cousin, Bobby Ray Eilts.

Karen leaves behind two daughters, Tamara (Bruce) Moore and Nicole (Luke) Haberl; her granddaughter, Brieann Haberl; her ex-husband and friend, Dennis Moore; her niece, Ginger (Ivan) Steele Smith; her great nieces, Lyla and Carole Smith; her aunts, Helen (Richard) Schoenrock and Harriett Melander; her uncles, Larry (Eleanor) Melander and Robert L.
