Edith Marie Harrington
September 19, 1926 - November 4, 2014Edith Marie (Veehoff) Harrington, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, with her loving family at her side.
Edith was born on September 19, 1926, on a farm near Ida Grove, Iowa. She attended country school in the Ida Grove, Iowa, area before moving to Storm Lake in 1940 where she attended St. Mary’s from the 8th grade until she graduated from high school in 1944. Next, she attended Mount St. Clare in Clinton, Iowa, for one year where she took a commercial course for secretarial training. She, then, took a job at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, before working at various secretarial positions for the Veteran’s Administration and the Job Service of Iowa.
On November 21, 1949, Edith married Ray Harrington. To this union, five children were born: Rae, Pat, Peg, Julie, and Steve.
Edith became a stay at home mom until her youngest child started school. Then, she returned to the work force as a cook at St. Mary’s in Storm Lake where she remained until 1987.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, attending the sporting events of her grandchildren, cooking, gardening, and canning. She, also, enjoyed the company of her beloved cat, Puddles.
She loved playing cards, BINGO with her grandchildren, going for walks, and attending plays and musicals with her friends and grandchildren. A deeply religious person, she prayed the Rosary multiple times a day. She was the first volunteer of the SOS Thrift Store.
Edith is survived by her five children: Rae (Mike) Thompson, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Pat (Julie) Harrington, of Pomeroy, Iowa, Peg Flynn, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Julie (Neil) Haefner, of Grand Junction, Iowa, and Steve (Sondi) Harrington, of Humboldt, Iowa; ten grandchildren: Amy (Jess) Thompson-Nauman, of Ham Lake, Minnesota, Kelly (Mark) Thompson-Nelson, of St. Paul, Minnesota, Jacob Harrington, of Pomeroy, Iowa, Tony Harrington, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jeremiah (Angie) Swanson, of Coggon, Iowa, Marria (Corey) Swanson-Kuhlemeier, of Rudd, Iowa, Ginger (Justin) Swanson-Lyman of Urbandale, Iowa, Annie Rae Flynn, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Sam Harrington, of Humboldt, Iowa, and Ashlyn Harrington, of Humboldt, Iowa; ten great-grandchildren: Quinn, Delaney, and Rylen Nauman; Holland and Grant Nelson; Keely, Brody, and Branden Kuhlemeier; Nevaeh and Guyson Lyman; her sister, Helen Reis, of Fonda, Iowa; her brother, Joe Veehoff, of Ozark, Missouri; her sister-in-law, Pat McKenna, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and her, brother-in-law, Glen Harrington, of Storm Lake, Iowa; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Veehoff; her husband, Ray Harrington, and her two brothers, Gerritt and Bernard Veehoff.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, November 7, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place on Thursday, November 6, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
